Undefeated Varsity Brawlers Look to Avenge Last Season’s Loss to 2009 League Champs Tough Cookies on Saturday, April 17th

Last season, two-time League Champions the Tough Cookies schooled the freshman Varsity Brawlers, winning by a decisive 35 points. This year, VB is ready to fight back. Who will come out on top of this hotly-contested grudge match: girl scouts or jocks? Find out on Saturday, April 17, at the Doll Factory (Historic Filipinotown - 1910 W. Temple St. 90026) when the L.A. Derby Dolls (www.derbydolls.com/la), Southern California’s premiere women’s banked track roller derby league, hosts a no-holds-barred contest between two tough and undefeated teams.
VB have proven to be serious contenders in the first game of their sophomore season. Lead by team captain and star jammer Long Island Lolita, VB beat the Sirens 129-100 in the 2010 season opener. Draft picks Firefly and Agnus Die will mark their first game as Brawlers, and hopefully leave a few marks on the Cookies at the same time. The first 300 fans to show their support for VB by wearing purple will receive a VB “Smiley” logo button.
The Tough Cookies have hung on to their 2008 and 2009 Championship momentum, beating Fight Crew in a close 103-93 battle earlier this season. Though captain Iron Maiven is out due to injury, the team remains a force on the track, fielding more All-Star team members than any other team in the league, including Ri-Ettes co-captain LEGacy and Aftershockers team captain Suzy Snakeyes.
Karling will rock out at halftime and DJ Judy Gloom will keep the beats going all night long. L.A. Derby Dolls events offer a full range of entertainment off the track, with the Vendor Village featuring art, jewelry and clothes, food from Garage Pizza and Hot Dog on a Stick, and healthy beverages from Ex-Drinks, with beer from Tecate and wine from Murphy-Goode, poured strongly by Alex’s Bar.
The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only five leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. The league also operates the Junior Derby Dolls for girls ages 8-17.

About the L.A. Derby Dolls:
Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls (www.derbydolls.com/la) are Southern California’s premiere women’s banked-track, quad-skating, roller derby league. Within the league, five fierce teams battle for dominance: Fight Crew, Sirens, Swarm, Tough Cookies and Varsity Brawlers. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful, do not be fooled by appearances – the L.A. Derby Dolls are athletes who skate a sport that is unscripted and real. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the L.A. Derby Dolls embody the do-it-yourself, “for the skaters, by the skaters” ethos of modern women’s roller derby.
