experienced the joy of meandering down the American River in a rubber
dinghy in 100F weather, getting into the occasional water pistol

Practical stuff
a) About $40 total
b) Reasonable swimmer
c) OK watching the Jerry Springer crowd
d) About an hour out of SF, outskirts of Sac
e) An all day affair, lunch + dinner
f) Only cans+plastic bottles allowed (i.e. PBR)
g) Cars needed
h) Goes with the flow
i) Water is slow moving, mostly shallow, and reasonably warm
