STRIPMALL ARCHITECTURE
When their longtime band, Halou, came to an end in 2008 (during a US tour with indie legend Bob Mould), Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom regrouped quickly and launched their new project, Stripmall Architecture. Stripmall Architecture often achieves an almost opiate effect, combining the intricate electronics and fragile, fallen-angel vocals of Halou with layers of gauzy guitars - both warm and fuzzy and often quite loud and confrontational. There's a sort of dizziness to the recordings due mainly to the hypnotic basslines and the coalescence of the textures the band cleverly layers to create something quite complex that can't be fully taken in without repeat listens. While it can be difficult to find a single genre into which Stripmall Architecture fits snugly, the bulk of their varied, eclectic and impressively pedigreed material seems to fall somewhere within the vast universes of noisy indie rock and early-90s shoegaze (if you're thinking of something between the anthemic atmospherics of Sigur Ros and the spangled-pop of the Cocteau Tiwns, you're in the right neighborhood).
GEOGRAPHER
After a number of deaths in his family, Geographer founder Michael Deni left his hometown in New Jersey for San Francisco. He spent the next several months with his guitar and a synthesizer he found on the street, turning the tragedy that drove him from home into songs rich with emotion and lush melodies. After the additions of cellist Nathan Blaz (previously in St. Vincent, on Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label) and drummer Brian Ostreicher, Geographer spent the next year playing clubs around the Bay Area, crafting their songs into the driving, heart-pounding epics that make up Innocent Ghosts. Deni's angelic vocals soar above thumping dance tunes with highs and lows that are simple and beautiful in their delivery.
After a packed album release party at San Francisco’s landmark Cafe du Nord that included members of Bright Eyes, and the privilege of being voted one of three “Undiscovered Bands You Need To Hear Now” by SPIN magazine, Geographer is poised on the brink of becoming one of the most exciting newcomers in Indie music.
DELLE VELLUM
Delle Vellum is one of the San Francisco's newest groups, with veterans of such bands as Immigrant, Audrye Sessions, the Paradise Boys, and Madelia. Made up of Aaron Hazen (drums), Andrew Burmester (bass), Patrick Sklenar (guitar), Ian Zazueta (keys and programming), and featuring the soaring and delicately emotive vocals of Olivia Barchard, Delle Vellum take their inspiration in part from lush guitars and synths a la My Bloody Valentine and Ride, and combine it with a tight, angular rhythmic approach reminiscent of such diverse sources as Can, Duran Duran, Joy Division, and Roxy Music with a dash of post rock. Their love of sonic exploration is always tempered by sultry hooks and a pop sensibility. Following their successful debut last fall, Delle Vellum continue to hone material in preparation for their debut recording this spring.
