THE COURTEENERS -
http://www.myspace.com/thecourteeners
Defying critics and doubters alike, The Courteeners' debut album St. Jude rocketed into the UK Top 5 on release, packing the hit singles What Took You So Long? and Not Nineteen Forever. Singer Liam Fray’s unflagging self-belief soon established him as a major figure in the music press, with many hailing him as the saviour of British guitar music.
CHICANE -
http://www.myspace.com/chicanemusic
Influential dance legend Chicane has taken the club world by storm over the last decade and a half with a lush musical confection that takes in elements of house, techno, trance, chill-out and classical, mixing them together in a huge technological blender to form a sound which is constantly evolving.
DJ YODA (FULL AUDIO VISUAL SET) -
http://www.myspace.com/djyodauk
Now here’s a man who surely needs no introduction. Through his inimitable Cut & Paste series, DJ Yoda has led the field in hip-hop mash-ups for well over 10 years, adding old-skool jump-up beats to everything from old George Formby records to the theme from The A-Team. His latest instalment – Cut & Paste 1930s Edition – continues this tradition in grand fashion, paying homage to the jazz & swing era in his inimitable cheeky style. And – best of all, some might say – he’s a bladdy Warwick graduate, innee!
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB -
http://www.myspace.com/bombaybicycleclub
Not since the arrival of Arctic Monkeys on the scene have a young band received quite so much acclaim as the splendiferous Bombay Bicycle Club. Their debut album I Had the Blues, But I Shook Them Loose landed last year to a hail of praise from broadsheets, bloggers, music press and tabloids, marking them out as serious contenders for the UK’s indie crown.
FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND -
http://www.myspace.com/funeralforafriend
Few bands inspire such rabid devotion among their fans as Welsh quartet Funeral For a Friend, whose never-say-die attitude and full-blooded live shows have made them one of the UK’s most enduring rock acts of the last 10 years.
CHIDDY BANG -
http://www.myspace.com/chiddybang
This US electro hip-hop duo’s infectious recent hit Opposite of Adults – a fluid stomper featuring a cut-up version of the hook from MGMT’s Kids – is undoubtedly one of the most memorable tracks to emerge this year. Established as an immediate dancefloor filler from the moment it first hit Top B, the track has proved a distinctive calling-card for one of rap’s brightest upcoming talents.
GIRLS CANT CATCH -
http://www.girlscantcatch.com/
Girls Can’t Catch are a sleek, ice-cool modern pop act who have already supported Girls Aloud on tour and look set to follow in their mentors’ footsteps. Comprising three super-foxy ladies keen to stamp their own personalities on the charts, this classy new trio aims to bring a little swagger back to the Top 40 by infusing their contemporary electro-pop sound with elements of big beat, hip-hop and modern RnB.
GOOD SHOES -
http://www.myspace.com/goodshoes
Good Shoes are absolutely ace - fact. Of all the antsy British indie bands to have emerged in recent years, this London quartet has truly cornered the market in dynamic bursts of 3-minute melody, with their tight and catchy tunes leant a bittersweet edge by Rhys Jones’s witty, self-deprecating lyrics.
A.SKILLZ -
http://www.myspace.com/djaskillz
Delivering a breathless fusion of hip-hop, funk, soul, breaks and drum’n’bass, A.Skillz has established himself as one of the nation’s premier party-rockers in recent years. Whether it’s reconstructing old favourites through an ingenious feel for the mash-up or scratching multiple platters into a frenzy, the man has only one aim – to make you dance like the coolest motherhubbard on the block.
OU EST LE SWIMMING POOL -
http://www.myspace.com/ouestleswimmingpool
As one might expect from a band with such a delicious moniker, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are a lot of fun. You may have heard their signature tune Dance the Way I Feel beaming out of the Top B and Electric City speakers like an intergalactic laser over the last few terms, and their ascent into the stratosphere of contemporary cool looks set to continue throughout 2010.
MORNING PARADE -
http://www.myspace.com/morningparade
The effervescent Morning Parade are an up & coming guitar band whose marriage of day-glo indie rhythms to rich song craft is currently making serious waves on the gig circuit. A head-on collision between the sounds of The Sunshine Underground, Editors and The Boxer Rebellion, the band’s songs are as emotionally-charged as they are danceable, and as such are destined to get both the heart and the feet pounding simultaneously.
TURNTABLES IN TECHNICOLOUR -
http://turntablesintechnicolor.co.uk/
Having recently bagged himself an October residency at Manchester’s legendary Haçienda club, the future is looking very bright indeed for Turntables In Technicolor.
LETHE -
http://www.myspace.com/letheuk
Kicking off the day, we have this year’s Warwick Battle of the Bands winners – the mighty Lethe. Now, trust us when we say that this doom-metal quartet is the very definition of what you might call a ‘Marmite band’. Peddling an intense, detuned variation on sludge (think Iron Monkey, Manatees and Cathedral, if you have the faintest idea about such things!), their sound is guttural, hard-hitting and very, very heavy.
2SUCKADJS –
http://www.myspace.com/2suckadjs
2Suckadjs are smashing up the club scene right now and with studio work and releases on the horizon it looks like a good 2010/11 for these guys. As long as it gets the clubs rocking Richie Rich and Jay Dot will play a set that spreads right through from Crack House, Dubstep, Electro, Garage, Baltimore and Grime which seems to be killing the upfront main stages. This hard working team are set to blow – don’t miss your chance to catch the next big thing.
DOG AND PONY vs EVE
Two of your favourite local student-run events will be rucking it out in the Dance Tent during the daytime. Expect a cutting-edge mixture of drum’n’bass, electro, dubstep, glitch house and all things that go “whomp”!
So there you have it – one festival, one afterparty, loads of great music and entertainment, but now we just need one more thing... YOU!
Get involved people, life is for living!
