Working with famous Moroccan artists who see themselves as ambassadors of their culture of Berbers! The goal is to connect with the universal culture of the whole world!
We all know “world music”. It is the wish of four outstanding people to pass on their capability to all interested people of the whole world - a fructifying exchange serving the insight of all people. Out of this concern this workshop will take place in September 2009 in Tamelalt, a village close to Boumalne du Dades, Morocco. It should inspire people from all over the world to get to know this dreamlike, beautiful country in a way differently.
Coming from the „red city“ of Marrakech, the way leads southwards, passing the holy mountains of the Berbers. After Ourzazate there is the gorgeous route torwards Boumalne du Dades, passing antique sites and groves of palms. Tamelalt, amidst of five blooming valleys, by the big river seems to be a special lieu for emerging artists!
Accompanied by Omar Zanifi, the goal is the atelier of the Mellal’s. Here, all guests will be welcome by Fatima, her brother Moha Mallal and Ismail Aboulaabas.
Fatima Mellal:
When Fatima was first noticed, she only spoke the dialect of her village which was undeveloped by that time. Four of her five brothers had apprehended an artistic profession, but as a woman, she had to wait a long time to get her chance. She was already in her 30ies, when she was allowed a Gouache painting box for children! From then on, nobody could stop her: Dreams have become true and in the meantime, her oeuvres may even be admired in New York!
She is a remarkable woman with a big heart. Her main concern are the poor people, the children and the young women of her village. With them, she shares her income and her outstanding courage!

Moha Mallal
Moha is an artist and a teacher of first rank. It is said that he was born with a paintbrush in his hand. Moha is an all-rounder: He sings, writes and paints. He blends all styles and his oeuvres are complex. In all his works his prime concern is expressed: To save the culture of the Berber in the middle of a pan-Arabic world! For many young people he is a role model and a speaking tube.

Ismail Aboulaabas
A sculptor who has dedicated himself to the beauty of wood since his childhood. As there were no role models in this remote aria of Morocco, Ismail had to teach himself -through books - all about woodcarving and sculptures. His amazingly beautiful art works appear sometimes surrealistic and abstract. They are deeply bound to the culture of the Berbers. And although he usually works alone in a garage, his works prove that there is no reason for him to hide.

As for Omar Zanifi, too, Ismail has encountered true friendship in the Mallal siblings. They focus on encouraging and promoting young artists.
Omar Zanifi
The studied guide, “the knight of the pen”, how he is called in his region as he fights for the concerns of his people. Since childhood versed into music and traditional dance, his main interests are the young talented musicians. Many of his poems are found in their songs.
His knowledge makes him one of the most interesting travelling companions.
Travel and workshop:
The offering to attend this extraordinary voyage and workshop turns on all enthusiasts of arts. While the workshop will more likely rely on an exchange of ideas for the adepts in art, it will also encourage beginners to try something new.
In the encounter of different cultures, a cooperation will occur which enables something new to emerge.
In the morning, Moha and Fatima will usually work with the Students, while Ismail will be with them during evening hours, to teach them carving pine trees, oliviers, etc.
The attendants will be partly accommodated with the artistic family Mellal, where the workshop will take place.
A stay during which - besides work – there will be enough time to sit together, to exchange ideas and opinions to sip tea. The sojourn will be flavoured with wonderful excursions into the breath-taking environment, conducted by Omar.
