Because there is a little nerd in all of us.
REMINDER: There is no obligation to be anywhere or do anything, other than embrace your inner nerd.
Everyone, remember to invite your nerdy friends and enemies. Acquaintances are a maybe.
May 25th, 2006: Geeks, Nerds, and even Dorks of the world, feeling under appreciated and unrecognized, feel the need for a day when they can cast off the ruthless oppression of the "popular."
The day recognized to not only be "Towel Day" (Do you know where your towel is?) but also the day when, 29 years earlier, Star Wars was first released in theaters, is chosen to celebrate this event. It is first celebrated in Spain and on the internets.
2008 it is recognized in the US. 2009, Canada.
This is a day not just for the socially awkward, the misfits, the scientists, the musicians, the fanboys, or the LARPers. Nay, on this day, even the jocks and the fashionistas, and the so called "cool" people can cast aside the shackles of social oppression, embracing the fact that there is a little nerd in all of us.
