SHIPSHAPE (A BATTLE): Work by Judith Zissman

San Francisco design store and gallery RARE DEVICE is proud to present Shipshape, a Battle: Work by Judith Zissman. The work will occupy the Rare Device gallery June 4 – June 27, 2010. A reception for the show will be held Friday, June 4, 2010 from 7 - 9 pm.
Refiguring the work of 17th-century Dutch maritime painter Willem Van de Velde the Elder, Shipshape confronts the role of the artist as war reporter at specific moments in history. Exploring the contrasts in epic scale and intimate detail in Van de Velde's work and in the spare but provocative story of his own life, Shipshape places the viewer directly inside the final battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War and examines Van de Velde's decision to leave the Netherlands for England, a dramatic change of homeland and loyalty in the midst of the wars he rose to fame documenting.
JUDITH ZISSMAN works with encaustics and mixed media. Her recent work explores obscured narratives and geographies, layering found texts and stories to create idiosyncratic and evocative maps of unknowable destinations. Judith has also worked in metals and hot glass, which she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design.
