Reel Pride Night Out! presents the film, OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY! a family romantic comedy about how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go…
The Hirsch's, are a nice Jewish family living in the North Shore of Long Island, where every Friday night Shirley and Martin (Lainie Kazan and Saul Rubinek) invite another "perfect" girl for Shabbat dinner in hopes that their son, Nelson (John Lloyd Young), will marry a nice Jewish girl. When they once again set him up on a date, Nelson reveals that he is already seeing someone. Shirley and Martin are thrilled and can’t wait to meet the lucky lady.
So who is her son is dating? Shirley decides to stop by Nelson’s apartment and is greeted at the door by Angelo Ferraro (Jai Rodriguez), who just happens to be Nelson’s live-in boyfriend. In order to not divulge Nelson’s secret life, Angelo introduces himself as the decorator. Shirley then meets the gorgeous neighbor Sybil (Carmen Electra), a Playpen magazine centerfold, and believes that she is the mysterious girlfriend. She is concerned that Sybil isn't Jewish but resigned that her son’s happiness is all that matters and can’t wait for the entire family to meet her at an upcoming wedding.
Nelson decides to take Angelo to the wedding, and halfway through the ceremony finally breaks the news to his parents that he is gay. At first, Shirley and Martin are confused and distraught, but when the reality sets in they start blaming each other for Nelson’s sexuality.
Struggling to accept the news, Shirley and Martin meet with a psychiatrist and talk with local members of the gay community. Martin even goes as far as to try to get Sybil to sleep with Nelson to make him straight. As a last resort, Shirley and Martin have dinner with Angelo’s parents, Teresa and Carmine Ferraro (Shelly Burch and Vincent Pastore), in order to understand their sons’ lifestyles. The mothers bond with one another, but the fathers start accusing the other’s son as the cause of their own son’s homosexuality.
Both families decide to hide their gay sons, but this goes awry when Nelson and Angelo decide to adopt a baby and it makes headline news. In an emotional confrontation, both families stand up and fight for their gay sons’ right against opposition. In an emotional victory the Hirsch's and the Ferraro's not only accept the fact their sons are gay but realize how much they actually love them.
