Planetwork had its first public conference in 2000. It brought together visionary thinkers and practical idealists to consider how the internet & information technology played a role in addressing the ecological crisis on our fragile planet. The vision expanded to include social concerns along with environmental ones.
The link tank hosted intense dialogues amongst a core group between 2001 and 2002 out of which two big projects arose - Interra Project focused on a way to support local economy transactions and Identity Commons focused on the development of an identity layer of the web. The Augmented Social Network: Building Identity and Trust into the Next Generation Internet was a foundational work for the use-centric Identity community that is still working on manifesting the vision of an open standards based distributed social network almost 10 years later.
Conferences were held in 2003 and 2004 along with a monthly networking forum founded in 2002 Johannesburg at the Earth Summit and continuing in San Francisco until active between 2002 and 2006.
Since then many of the ideas, visions and projects articulated in the community have become real. The network is still there and it is time to reactivate it.
We are convening Planetwork 10 as a reunion and a re-imagining - to reflect on where the ideas that circulated through the network have gone and where they might go into the future. Discussion topics that might surface throughout the two days include:
* Sensor Networks for conservation
* Car Pool Networks with Mobile devices
* Biodiversity and Information about endangered species habitats mapped online
* Green Media
* Green Interfaces and UI
* Protest and Activist Movements Online
* Persistent Digital Identity Online
* Open Standards for Social Networks
* Ecological Design
* Collective Intelligence
* Deliberative Democracy
* Global Systems
* Nonprofit Technology Tools
* Digital Bill of Rights
* Geo Tagging
* Collaboration
* Government Transparency
* Social Entrepreneurship
* Radical Philanthropy
* Online Community
* Electronic Voting
* Social Networking for Social Good
* Community Currency
* Real-World Games
* Localization
* Pattern Languages for Change
