BRETT DENNEN, OZOMATLI AND SIERRA LEONE'S REFUGEE ALL STARS TO PLAY 2010 TC SUMMER MICROBREW & MUSIC FESTIVAL
Singer-songwriter sensation Brett Dennen, Grammy-winning band Ozomatli and internationally acclaimed act Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are among the musical guests scheduled to perform at the 2010 Traverse City Summer Microbrew & Music Festival August 27 & 28 at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons.
Brett Dennen, the popular crooner behind such hits as "Darlin' Do Not Fear" and "Ain't No Reason," previously played in Traverse City in 2009 before a full house at the City Opera House. Grammy-winning Latin/hip hop/funk band Ozomatli has shared the stage with artists ranging from Carlos Santana to O.A.R. to Rage Against the Machine, and became official cultural ambassadors in 2008 at the invitation of the U.S. State Department for their commitment to social justice. Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars is comprised of survivors of West Africa's refugee camps whose hopeful West African and Jamaican reggae music have earned them spots at Bonnaroo, South by Southwest and on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Acclaimed musical guests and past festival acts including Chicago Afrobeat Project, Lubriphonic, Heatbox, Down the Line, Bump, Mike Moran, Levi Britton, Grand Traverse Pipes & Drums and more to be announced will round out the festival weekend lineup.
The TC Summer Microbrew & Music Festival launched in August 2009, drawing nearly 3,000 attendees in its first year. The event was billed as a "celebration of craft beer, local harvest and live music." Over 30 national and Michigan breweries, six local restaurants and 50 musicians from around the country were featured at the event, including Grammy-winning artist Buckwheat Zydeco.
The festival raised over $5,000 for local non-profit organization Little Artshram and inspired a spin-off winter version at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa during February's Cherry Capital Winter WonderFest. That event broke Resort attendance records with over 3,000 festival-goers and raised another $5,000 for Little Artshram.
The festival has been so successful that organizers announced they are expanding the summer event to two days this year - August 27 & 28. The first night will be open to all ages and will feature a headlining evening performance by Brett Dennen on the Historic Front Lawn at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. A special beer tent for attendees 21 and up will be on-site that evening featuring selected microbrews and craft food offerings.
The second day, open exclusively to attendees 21 and up, will feature an expanded festival experience with over 45 breweries, two stages featuring live music including Ozomatli and Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, craft food stands and vending, and special partner activities and events.
"Everything about the festival will be bigger and better this year," said Sam Porter, owner of Porterhouse Productions. "We're taking all of the elements people loved about the past summer and winter festivals and raising them to the next level. This will be a huge community celebration that should bring the summer season in TC to a close with a bang."
Porter also announced the festival is partnering with the Third Coast Bicycle Festival (
www.tcbikefest.org) to highlight special cycling attractions and events throughout the weekend, including fixed gear bike sprints, trial rides, cycle cross races and more. The Third Coast Bicycle Festival takes place August 22-29 throughout Traverse City.
