Most typeahead interfaces suggest queries. Facebook's new search bar goes one step further by performing real queries and rendering results as you type. These queries are tailored to the contents of your social network: your friends' friends, applications, interests, and open graph nodes all influence ranking. Since no two queries are alike, simple global query caching schemes are ineffective. Building it involved challenges at every layer of the abstraction stack, from the hardware/software interface in Facebook's data center out to javascript performance in the user's browser. Come hear about what we've done, and what we need to do next.
