Based on my understanding of history from Public School, Independence Day was the day when Will Smith got revenge on the British who sent Aliens to blow up the White House. Then the guy from Jurassic Park did some science stuff, and Bill Pullman gave a good speech and changed his name to George Washington and became our first President. And now, every year, we celebrate and honor Will Smith by blasting "Summertime" and drinking beers and pretending we actually are patriotic when, as Americans, the only time patriotism is cool is when there is drinking involved (see also: World Cup, 2010).
