Join us for our annual celebration of independence and freedom as we chow on charred meats and pay homage to the Mesopotamians* who were smart enough to create the tasty beverage we lovingly know as 'beer'.
OUR PARTY HAS A PURPOSE
This year we are featuring Social Media Club as the main dish. In fact, this BBQ will serve as the official launch of our Freedom from Social Media Douchebaggery Campaign (aka our 1st official membership drive). With over 230 chapters located all over the world, our experiment in open communities has been a rousing success, which we are now going to take to the next level as a 501c6 Member Owned Association (with a modern twist).
It's our hope that this membership drive will not only help to provide greater freedom from social media douchebaggery, but also greater freedom from bootstrapping our operations! In order to fulfill our primary mission of furthering media literacy, which is more important today then when we started, we need the funding to hire program managers and further develop the web site as a hub for the industry and a platform for professionalism.
BACKGROUND ON THE D-BAGGERY
Its clear that the Marketing and PR industries have seen a lot of changes over the last four years, most notable of which has been the rise of Social Media as a legitimate profession. Social Media is all over mainstream news, it's finally being taught in schools and organizations, everyone from the POTUS to the corner bodega, have embraced its use.
Now, with all this good, comes the realization that our industry has had its share of Social Media douchebags popping up from every dark corner. Overpromising and underdelivering. Promoting themselves at the expense of their clients. Selling the secrets to getting thousands of Twitter followers for only $29.99 and so many other varieties.
So today we are appropriately launching our Freedom from Social Media Douchebaggery Campaign on the 4th of July, 2010 and in so doing, will strive to take the 'me' out of Social Media and celebrate the accomplishments 'we' have done.
We are also announcing the 'official' launch of the new member website and are excited to be kicking off the first membership drive that will help Social Media Club continue to grow the organization and execute on additional program development. We will not be asking you join on the 4th, you can if it so moves you, but we would appreciate your help and support to get the word out once the announcement hits.
ITS A PARTY
Yes, its the launch of our campaign, but there won't be any boring speeches and we won't talk about Twitter endlessly. We will have the WII and the Xbox set up in the living room, music and everything else you have come to expect from our parties. This time though, we will have a few more people perhaps and spend a bit of time in our backyard where hopefully you will be able to grab some figs, lemons and maybe even plums from our trees :)
The point being, its a party first and a launch second, so we are looking forward to seeing you and having a good time together.
MORE ABOUT FOOD/BEV
We will have basic grilling treats and a few beverages to wet your whistle. We do ask everyone to add to the beverage stack by bringing a 6-pack, bottle of wine or something else sippable. If you have a diet that does not include red meat, we would recommend you bring a little something of your own to fire up while here and will make sure there is plenty of butane to go around.
ODDS AND ENDS
The weather likes to keep us on toes here. One minute we are blazing in 85 degree sun, the next, we are wrapped up in parkas and blankets. We are hoping for decent weather, but recommend you dress in layers as you just never know and it does tend to get a bit chilly in the afternoon this time of year.
Cats. We have them. Two to be exact. If you have a tendency to sneeze while around these furry creatures, it is recommended you pop an allergy pill and plan to spend some time outside. :)
Parking. Fluctuates as much as the weather. If you can take public transportation, we highly recommend it. You can take any Muni train line and get off at the Church Street station (N drops you off at Church/Duboce). It is a mere two block walk from there. I know buses run by as well, but haven't been on one since we moved here so we are noobs to #s and lines.
We know there will be a few parties going on this day. We hope you can come by, even for a short while and celebrate with us.

* I don't know if the Mesopotamians were were the creators of beer, just pretend I know what I am talking about this time, ok?
P.S. We do not publish our home address to the general public, but do have a place marked on Fourquare as 'Chez Heuer' so you can get your fix and still respect our privacy. :)
