The rise of the super angel investor has disrupted the startup ecosystem. Whereas angel investing was once a sleepy backwater dominated by old school groups like the Band of Angels, a new breed of angel investors, often armed with institutional funds, has made seed stage investing the hot space in Silicon Valley. Between the super angels and new distribution channels like YCombinator (and its imitators) and AngelList, it seems to be a golden age for entrepreneurs raising seed rounds.
But as super angels raise larger and larger funds ($30 million+), will these brash investors come into conflict with traditional VC? Will angel syndicates migrate upwards from $500K rounds to the multi-million dollar rounds that are the traditional province of VC? Will VCs be shut out of seed stage deals? Are super angels encouraging entrepreneurs to start companies with the hopes of selling to Google for $25 million?
Or will these two groups settle into a comfortable and mutually beneficial equilibrium, where super angels help give birth to more great companies for the VC deal pipeline?
We'll cover all these issues and more with a rollicking, entertaining debate between famed super angel Dave McClure of 500 Startups and long-time VC (and dodgeball champion) David Hornik of August Capital. Expect the fireworks to fly as they debate these issues and answer your questions.
