HAWAII PREMIERE: EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP
Director: Banksy
UK & USA, 2010, 87 mins.
Banksy, called a ‘British National Treasure’ by the UK press, is a world-renowned graffiti artist whose work has popped up in post-hurricane New Orleans and on the Palestinian segregation wall in the West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop is the story of how eccentric Los Angeles-based French shopkeeper-turned-filmmaker Thierry Guetta attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. The film includes rare, exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and other infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. It also offers incredible insight into Banksy’s world as he plans and executes one of his most audacious stunts at Disneyland. A New York Times Critics' Pick, Exit Through the Gift Shop is best described by Banksy himself: "It's basically the story of how one man set out to film the unfilmable. And failed."
