We’d like to invite you to join your fellow LA-based JHU Alumni in a new local book club/discussion group. The sketch details can be found below:
WHO: Eight to ten curious and non-judgmental people who will commit to reading one “story” book (example: Freedom by Jonathan Franzen) or one “analysis” book (example: Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner) a month and discussing them.
WHAT: Half fiction, half non-fiction. Fiction is mostly “intelligent” best-selling authors. Non-fiction includes history, economics, politics, science, psychology, and/or anything else that provides an opportunity to learn but is still entertaining and not a chore to read. Suggestions for the reading list are welcomed. Proposed titles to date include:
• The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York - Robert A. Caro
• Red Queen – Matt Ridley
• Culture of Fear – Barry Glassner
• Predictably Irrational – Dan Ariely
• The Man Who Loved China – Simon Winchester
• Freedom – Jonathan Franzen
• Jewel in the Crown – Paul Scott
• Imperial Bedrooms – Bret Easton Ellis
• Candide – Voltaire
• Maus – Art Spiegelman
WHY: Intelligent discussion of interesting books we probably would read anyway. An opportunity for social interaction.
WHEN: Once a month on a weeknight, 7 to 9 PM. Beginning September 2010. Snack food (pizza, etc) and drinks provided.
WHERE: Rotating hosts based on participation and availability. Current locations include Glendale and Westwood.
If you’re interested, please let us know in the coming week and include any books you’d like to add to the suggested list. We’d ultimately like to choose one book at the end of this week/early next week so everyone has some time to read and we can have our first meeting tentatively on/around the week of October 11th. (The current FB event is a tentative time/date.)
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, comments or would like to help host a meeting in the future.
Best regards,
