UNLIKE GALLERY. STEFF PLAETZ. 2092.
an exhibition of new paintings
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY 8TH OCTOBER, 7.30 PM
EXHIBITION RUNS: OCTOBER 10TH - NOVEMBER 5TH
Steff Plaetz began painting in Bristol in the early '90s, developing a loose and spontaneous style incorporating a uniquely 'freehand' stencilling approach based on 'automatic' drawings and sketches which retain their rawness through to the final artwork.
His pages in the first 'Scrawl' book (Booth Clibborn Editions), published when he was virtually an unknown, to this day stand up to the work of some of the more illustrious names in that publication and like his early sparring partners Mr Jago and Will Barras, he has earned the right to be talked about in the same breath as the artists who initially inspired him. Some 10 years on, and he is still delivering endlessly fresh designs with whatever colours, shapes and expressions of movement he favors at the time.
This latest exhibition '2092' at Unlike Gallery was inspired as much by the artist's own globally nomadic lifestyle as his soft spot for quality sci-fi, that was inevitably nurtured by being a kid growing up through the '80s. Colliding ideas of bleak futro-industrial landscapes with dream-like snapshots of urban activity, Steff's infinitely sustainable resource of imagination runs as wild as the acrylics and spray paints that color this collection of 18 new works, which he labels as "Near-Future Science Fiction."
Steff has exhibited his works internationally in London, New York, Osaka, Paris, Hong Kong, Brussels, Barcelona, Glasgow, Cologne and Tokyo and has been commissioned and collected by Ian Brown, Michael Stipe and David Holmes amongst others.
Show runs 11th October to 5th November
Open daily monday - friday 12PM - 18PM and by appointment
