Orchestral rock band The Definite Articles has completed work on their first full-length album, King Merriweather. And at long last, on Friday November 19th and Saturday November 20th, The Definite Articles will celebrate its release with two live presentations of the album in its entirety.
The seeds for the album were planted by a single song that bandleader Shawn Alpay wrote in 2007. The set of lyrics contained there seemed to describe a much different place than those constructed for his other songs, and it inspired Shawn to compose more in that vein; within a few months, the bulk of the album had been penned. Over the next two years, song arrangements took shape as a full collaboration with the other members of the band. Recording at John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone commenced this past June; instrumentation recorded during the session ultimately comprised 30 musicians, including woodwinds, horns, harp, choir, and a dozen strings. On King Merriweather, the group constructs a swirling, bittersweet tale of love, choice, and regret. Some songs swell to an epic size, others remain small and restrained; all reinforce a set of underlying themes that take multiple listens to fully uncover.
The core band will be joined onstage by a portion of the orchestral musicians that tracked in the studio. These players come from a range of backgrounds, anywhere from self-taught to conservatory-level, but each will contribute something different and lovely to the music.
Opening the Friday 11/19 show will be DoomBird.
Opening the Saturday 11/20 show will be the inimitable John Vanderslice. Owner of Tiny Telephone, a pillar of encouragement, and one of our very favorite songwriters. This record simply couldn't have existed without him. He will very graciously be joining us with a solo acoustic set, and when it comes to describing our gratitude, words fail.
Supporting the Saturday 11/20 show will be Sacramento's Sea of Bees. "Multi-instrumentalist Julie Baenziger hails from Grandaddy's stomping grounds, California's Central Valley, and like her onetime neighbors, she has an impeccable knack for infusing despair with charm. Her pain is the loveless kind, and she conveys it in a voice equal parts twang and coo, backed by lush country-folk and gossamer bedroom haze."
The show will be presented at 32 Ocean, a church built in the 1920's by famed San Francisco architect Julia Morgan; the wooden rafters and stained-glass windows will provide a evocative backdrop to the evening's proceedings. In addition, the building will be decorated in a manner reflecting the character and mood of the album.
