Hello Facebook friends. I am making October 22 national mass unfriending day. At Midnight I am going to being doing a mass UnFriending in order to focus facebook activities (not my friends) for the better.
Here are the rules for National Mass Unfriending Day (NMUFD).
1) You cannot choose to keep someone. Either they ask you not to unfriend them or they get unfriended.
2) You are allowed to tell people to ask you not to unfriend them but that is the only way it can be done.
3) Attending the event means you will be doing a mass unfriending as well. It does not mean you want to remain friends with me. (if you see a friend that is attending you should probably tell them you don't want to be unfriended.
4) Not attending only means you will not be doing a mass unfriending... it is not a request to be unfriended.
5) The only way to be unfriended is to not ask to remain friended.
6) A response is not done by simply joining the event. The mass unfriended needs to hear it from you in your own words either by facebook message, wall post, message on the event page, email, telephone call or hand written letter delivered by the post office in your own remarkable penmanship (wouldn't that be something!).
7) You must make it clear that you want to remain friended. Simply saying "Cool idea man." Does not give any indication and will result in being unfriended.
8) When the time comes you must unfriend anyone that has not requested not to be... no matter who it is... your Wife, mother, sister, boyfriend.
If you feel like there is a reason why we should be connected then I am sure there is. Let me know so I don't do it to you.
I am not trying to be self indulgent or feed a desire for self importance. I am just trying to focus my life on what really matters. I am discovering that Facebook (not you) is pretty low in that totem pole.
Don't think your imune. I am basing who doesn't get unfriended by who responds. I am not choosing anybody to stay based on my own personal desire.
I encourage you to join the group and do the same.
This event is loosely inspired by the many truths written (and not written) in Malcolm Gladwels article in the New Yorker about Social Networks. I wont link to it. If you truly want to read it you'll make the effort on your own.
