INTERNAL
Maverick performance makers GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN challenge themselves to respond to Belgian company Ontroerend Goed's recent smash-hit piece ‘Internal’. But with conflicting ideas about how to do that, some stuff they found in a garage and a strict no-touch policy, how close do they really want to get?
GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN are known for inserting their work into dialogue with other existing work – they posited their site-specific DRUNK ENOUGH TO SAY I LOVE YOU? (“excellently acted production” – Time Out, **** - whatsonstage.com) as a direct response to the Royal Court’s 2006 version – and here they push the game even further, sculpting this new devised piece entirely around the question of what it is to respond to other work.
“All artists respond to other artists’ work in their own work, whether or not they even know they are doing it” says Artistic Director Hester Chillingworth who has just finished assisting Tim Etchells on the latest Forced Entertainment show THE THRILL OF IT ALL. “In EXTERNAL we hurl that on-going conversation right out into the open and onto the stage and force it to fight for its life, fully exposed, giggling, gnashing and doing its own head in.”
