On this Year’s Gala Theme: La Belle Époque
This year’s Gala theme, La Belle Époque, was inspired by the innovation of the golden era, when science, technology and especially the arts, flourished all over the world. It was the height of Impressionism, the flowering of Art Nouveau, and the birth of modernism and expressionism. The comedic full-length ballet Coppélia, which will have its San Francisco Ballet premiere in March 2011, originally debuted in Paris in 1870. This period marked a time of cultural transition, between tradition and the rise of the grandeur, creativity, and beauty known as La Belle Époque.
