In Belarus going to the theatre can be a crime.
The Belarus Free Theatre has to invite its audience by text message to a secret spot in the countryside to see a performance. Audience members have been arrested, while actors have been subject to death threats and intimidation.
On Sunday 5 December, Index on Censorship present the acclaimed Belarus Free Theatre alongside some of biggest stars of stage and screen at the Young Vic in London.
The double-bill includes the critically-celebrated piece Numbers followed by the UK premiere of Discover Love, the powerful love story of Irina Krasovskaya and her dissident publisher husband Anatoli Krasovsky, who was abducted in 1999 and never seen again. This ground-breaking event is a show of support for free speech in Belarus by Index on Censorship as it launches its campaign Zone of Silence.
