~Phaded~
(Fresh-Kid.com/Subfix/Smartbar/Dubstep.fm)
Chicago’s favorite Dub-Slinger, Victor Holloway (aka Phaded) is a front-line veteran of the exploding North American Dubstep Scene. A Computer Science major at UMC, Phaded started out as a DJ at local clubs in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri. Always the audiophile, a journey through his music collection could take you down a path starting at Hip Hop, with stops to pay homage to Jazz & Blues Standards and carrying along to the sounds of Classic Rock and Dub Reggae.
Phaded eventually made his way to Chicago in 2003 and was introduced to Dubstep three years later after he listened to the legendary ‘Dubstep Wars’ podcast hosted by Mary Anne Hobbes on BBC Radio 1. Distinguishing itself from its UK Garage and Grime predecessors, Dubstep tracks differ in style by a heavy emphasis on Sub-Bass and a distinct half-time structure. Although initially adopting the spacious minimal aspects of Dub Reggae, it now incorporates elements of many other genres, such as Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, Techno and Breaks. It was this vast sonic canvas that held so much appeal to Phaded and motivated him to give it exposure wherever he could.
With furthering the Dubstep sound in mind, Phaded took part in the development of two highly influential entities: Dubstep.fm and Dubfix. Launched in May 2007 out of Seattle, Dubstep.fm is the brainchild of DopeLabs, providing a high-quality internet radio stream to showcase the sound. Coinciding with the station’s launch was the first broadcast of Phaded’s ‘The Dented Sessions’. The show has had guest appearances from artists such as DZ, King Cannibal, DopeLabs and Zeno, as well as Chicago mainstays Nameloc, DJ Solo, Chris Widman and Whoa-B. Now approaching its 3rd anniversary, Dubstep.fm has grown from its humble beginnings to an extended community of DJs and volunteers, with a listenership that spans the globe.
Phaded’s other labor of love is the event that changed the way Chicago and the rest of the Midwest region embraced the sound: Dubfix. Since 2008 these events have provided a platform showcasing both pioneers of the genre and regional talent alike. Now in conjunction with Abstract Science, Dubfix affiliated events continue to bring you the sounds of the most talented performers in the world. It is the hottest Dubstep event Chicago has to offer, as evidenced by a list of featured artists including Skream, Rusko, Caspa, Benga, Mary Anne Hobbes, Distance, Tes La Rok and Excision.
Phaded has long embraced a digital medium both as a producer and performer, eventually embracing the power and flexibility of Ableton Live. His live sets are peppered with exclusive tracks direct from both artists and labels alike, with a long list of affiliations to established heavyweights: Badman Press, Savory Audio, Shift Records, and Filthy Digital to name a few. With an aggressive mixing style, top notch track selection and a knack for knowing how to work the crowd, the quest to hone his skills in the mix is never ending. It is this drive that defines him- both as a performer and behind-the-scenes player. With support from a cult-like following worldwide, Phaded will be delivering the music you’ve been waiting all your life to hear at Smartbar and beyond for years to come.

~ Dr. Awkward~
(Columbian Dubstep Cartel)
A.k.a. Nick Meyer, The awkward doc first touched turntables about a year and a half ago, and hasn't looked back since. The year of playing live has made Nick a hometown favorite, and allowed him to share the stage with some of the biggest names in electronic music today... Vaski, Siren, DZ, HD4000, Ill Gates, plus Datsik and Dieselboy in the near future, just to name a few. His passion for different types of music outside the electronic scene, be it blues guitar, underground hip-hop, or classical piano, lends a sound, flow, and emotion to his shows that is quite rare in the dubstep scene. Keep an eye out... Things could get awkward...

~ Pah Jé vs. Hendrix~
in a heads up tag team
~Pah Jé~
STL's best kept secret, Adam Sladek aka Pah Jé has been pushing the envelope in EDM for 7 years. Throughout this time, his extensive track selection and "jack-of-all-trades" mentality has propelled him through many different theatres of music, including Electrobreaks, Drum and Bass, Jungle, Breakcore, IDM/Experimental/Glitch, and most recently, Dubstep and Garage. Pah Jé was one of the first few Dubstep selectors in town and has spent the past 4 years behind the decks exposing the midwest region to the future sounds of bass music, first with Unitovone, and now with the Rise Up crew (formerly Dub Hz). He has also been involved with the online radio station Dubstep.FM and can be spotted within the archives on the partially defunct "Dub Hz" radio program.
With a debut release on Betamorph Recordings' recent "Dubsteppers for Haiti" compilation series, and many more on the way, 2010 will be a big year for Pah Jé, as his tracks are receiving support and remix treatment from artists like Trillbass, XI, Bombaman, Conscious Pilot, and Hulk. Taking synthesis as far as it will go, his signature recipe of abstracted polyrhythms and deep, dark, contorted bass weight sticks out like a sore thumb.
Hendrix
One of Stls finest steps to the decks to deliver you some of his newest self-produced genius. Be sure to check this new comer as he will surely leave a memorable impression.
