The start-upper's guide to real-time analytics data crunching - Harry Robertson, Analytics Tech Lead
Real-time analytics is central to Ooyala's business: it provides insights to our customers about their content's performance, and internally it gives us a snap picture of market trends and how our video platform is performing. But processing terabytes of log data continuously flowing in can be a daunting task, especially when you're a start-up and not overflowing with data-centers. Join us to learn how Ooyala combines open-source technologies like Hadoop and Cassandra to tackle the challenge, and what kind of frameworks we've built on top to both ensure robustness and allow rapid development and iteration (including our soon-to-be-open-sourced Ruby Map-Reduce framework!).
How to do scalable UI-heavy development at a breakneck pace - Phil Crosby, Backlot Tech Lead
The problem for startups has always been producing more software faster. We've gained a ton of wisdom about this problem while cranking out our largest frontend product -- Backlot. We will share much of what we've learned about building beautiful UIs and the APIs that power them at an alarming rate. Learn about things like standalone views, our take on cross-browser woes, the best of CSS3, SASS, thin client best practices, and client side unit testing. We'd love to show you a couple of fun tools we've open-sourced along the way: shoulda.js and livecss.

About Ooyala
Founded by Sean Knapp and Bismarck Lepe (Google, Stanford Alum) in 2007, Ooyala has raised over 40M in funding, grown to over 80 employees worldwide and has built the world's leading video monetization platform powering companies like ABC/Disney, MTV, Warner Brothers, Bloomberg and hundreds more.
Ooyala's 25-person engineering team (broken down into multiple 4-6 person scrum units) builds software that reaches over 60M people every month which we intend to triple by the end of 2011. The Analytics team alone processes over a billion transactions per day and the Transcoding team has encoded and distributed over 5 million hours (570 years worth!!!) of video. Whether it’s C++ distributed systems, highly available consumer facing Ruby on Rails Applications and APIs, sophisticated Ajax web applications, complex Machine Learning Algorithms, and powerful Hadoop and Cassandra based analytics systems, we’re working on some pretty cool stuff - and the real fun is only just beginning.
