This year’s collaboration between students from the MFA Curating at Goldsmiths College and the MA Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art seeks to make visible the processes involved in exhibition-making and its accompanying notions of scale and duration. This changing display of works from the Zabludowicz Collection will be punctuated by a programme of artists’ commissions and interventions.
Working with the Zabludowicz Collection, a team of curators will be staging an exhibition of selected works from the Collection over the course of the weekend. Exhibited in three-hourly shifts, artworks will be added to and subtracted from the exhibition space. Viewers will be able to witness each different stage of the curatorial process including discussion, selection of works, installation and de-installation. Artists include Nobuyoshi Araki, Matthew Barney, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Richard Billingham, Tobias Buche, Susan Collis, William Daniels, Flavio Favelli, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Candida Höfer, On Kawara, Vik Muniz, Katie Paterson, Paul Pfeiffer, Amalia Pica, Pipilotti Rist, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Wolfgang Tillmans, Guido van der Werve, and Adriana Varejão.
A concurrent programme of artists’ commissions and interventions responding to the unique circumstances of Testing Ground’s temporal structure will run throughout the exhibition. Engaging with notions of time, space and sound, these works will exist along different time scales, from short durational performances to three-day installations by artists including Robert Chilton, Rosie Cooper, Meta Drcar and Dori Deng, Pablo A. Padilla Jargstorf, Partial Index, S/Z, Euan Taylor, Julia Vogl, and Louise Weiss.
Commissioned artists Ladies of the Press* and writers from MFA Art Writing at Goldsmiths and MA Critical Writing at the RCA will be present throughout the weekend, responding to the shifting framework of the exhibition. Resulting work will contribute to an online ready-to-print publication, which will be generated on site.
The exhibition’s opening event will be held on Friday 28 January from 6-10pm and will include a curatorial discussion regarding selected works from the Zabludowicz Collection, live performance and music.
