Hi all,
We're planning a gathering of people ('flashmob') on 5 February, the first weekend of Chinese New Year.
If you've seen the new HSBC advert with the hundreds of sky lanterns floating to the heavens - that is exactly the idea on what we are attempting to achieve, but in London.
We've identified Primrose Hill as being a suitable site to launching these lanterns, but if you have any suggestions on alternative locations please let us know below.
Due to the nature of sky lanterns, we can only launch them when there is no to little wind and definitely not when it is raining. If the weather does not suit us, we will have to postpone it to another date.
What you will need to do:
- Get a couple of (if possible wire-free, eco-friendly) sky lanterns. You can get this at most places now. I've seen them on sale at Cotswolds, Tesco, Hawkin's Bazaar, Amazon, play.com, Firebox.com etc. The one sold at Cotswolds are eco-friendly lanterns with no wires.
- Bring matches, fire lighters etc.
- Dress warmly
- Have fun

Update:
We've received an email and phone call from the Airspace Utilisation Section of the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The bottom line is, we have an agreement in principle with the CAA to proceed with the event.
The CAA will issue a NOTAM (Navigation Warning) at 1900 hours, the time when we will set off the lanterns. On our side, we will be informing the London Heliport ATC Watch Supervisor 15 minutes prior to the release of the lanterns. We will also notify the local police.
Note: Please note that the launch will be cancelled if there are strong winds.
