Whats happening?
On the 13th of March 2011, hundreds of poeple will peacefully occupy Newcastle harbour and prevent the passage of coal ships. This will be the sixth action of its kind in Newcastle. No one has ever been arrested. In March 2010 we successfully stopped all ship movements in the harbour for the entire day.
Why blockade the coal port?
The export coal industry is Australia's biggest and fastest growing contribution to climate change.
In May 2010, a third coal terminal was opened in Newcastle. This will bring Newcastle's export capacity to 180 million tonnes of coal every year. This coal, when burned, will produce roughly as much carbon pollutin as we produce from all sources, right across Australia. Within 10 years the coal corporations plan to export over 300 million tonnes of coal per year.
This madness has to stop. The climate crisis is deepening and time is fast running out. Politicians are failing to take action, so we have to do it ourselves....and we'd love you to join us!
We are calling for:
- An immediate moratorium on the expansion of the coal industry in Australia.
- A stages phase-out of the existing coal industry, replacing all coal industry jobs wth jobs in renewable energy industries.
