International Day Against Homophobia is all about raising awareness that being a homosexual is okay. And that being a homosexual doesn't mean you're unlike anyone else, that you should be accepted just as everyone else is. Homosexuality is not a sickness, and it's not contagious: spread the word. Allow homosexuals to feel accepted, to be themselves as everyone else is. Help end homophobia. We have to raise awareness for this cause. Some people are saying that this should be everyday, and although thated be nice, this is a protest. It's meant to be on one specific day. and remember - anyone, anywhere can participate!
in 2010 everyone wore black shirts, this year we are going to wear red glow sticks around our necks. this will be more symbolic, and people will ask about it which means we will be able to spread the word, also; its easier!
if you have any questions post it on the board, id be happy to answer them. or if you have any suggestions or concerns youre welcome to facebook email me.
A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR, REBECCA: everyone needs to stay open-minded about this. words are just that: words. they are hard to use because theres really never a perfect word for what youre trying to say. the event name 'international day against homophobia' does not mean: international day attacking people who are homophobes. the MEANING behind the name, to me, is: everyone around the world helping to stop homophobia. not against the people who are homophobic!
what i want is for people who are homophobic (keep in mind thats a flexible term: they may not be actually afraid of gays, maybe simply dont like them for the wrong reasons) to realize that being gay isnt really a big deal. its nothing truly different because there are SOOO many gay people around the world. and its not really abnormal for the same reasons. its not like having sex with rabbits; we are all still human! i mean; love is love! thats all i really want out of this, and i hope everyone else can realize this as well.
thank you everyone, i really appreciate all of the comments. and i ESPECIALLY appreciate the fact that were all remaining civil: no cruelty or harshness is needed. its okay to debate beliefs but when things get hurtful is when i have to remove the comments. stay peaceful(:
we did it in 2010, lets make it even bigger this year!
thanks ~ rebecca ~
