Q: What's a hashtag?
A: Hashtags are keywords that can be searched on Twitter, and are tagged using a pound symbol (#) before the intended word or phrase. For example, a tourist may tweet that he or she is “visiting #DC,” then search #DC to find out what others are saying or doing in the city.
Q: What am I hashtagging?
A: For this project, we've assigned hashtags to popular campus locations, including The Dav (#Dav), Mary Graydon Center (#MGC), Bender Arena (#Bender), and more. Signs will be posted showing the appropriate hashtag (but feel free to make up your own as well!). Tweet about where you are on campus using the specified hashtag and provide praises, complaints, thoughts, or whatever else you like about different areas around campus. Be sure to include the #smcedu hashtag to be included in the contest.
Q: Contest? What do I have to do to win?
A: The most prolific twitterer each day will get special shout-outs from the club on Twitter (@AU_SMCEDU) as well as by executive board members. The person who contributes the most tweets by the end of the two weeks wins $100 in Living Social Bucks!
Q: When is the contest running?
A: The event will run for two weeks, beginning January 31 and concluding February 13.
Q: What's the point?
A: The AU Social Media Club was founded on the belief that conversation should be the center of our education. This is a chance to be a part of that conversation by using campus hashtags on Twitter.
Q: What else does the AU Social Media Club do?
A: The AU Social Media Club's goal is to educate and explore the potential uses for social media in a variety of contexts, especially education. The club hosts workshops, panels, and weekly meetings to discuss different online networking tools and how people can benefit from them. The club is hosting a DC-wide conference on social media, the Social Learning Summit, April 1- 3, 2011 at American University’s School of International Service. More information coming soon.
