We are pleased and honored to have veteran journalist and published author Dan Sloan present his new book "Playing To WiiN: Nintendo and the Video Game Industry's Greatest Comeback" which will officially be released on February 15.
Dan Sloan is a senior correspondent with Reuters Television, whose reports and interviews have appeared on CNN, CNBC, the BBC, CCTV, and numerous other global broadcasters.
Please join us for a lively discussion about Nintendo, the global video game industry, the nature of Japanese companies and their future, and the outlook for the entertainment industry that has 3D consoles and numerous other changes in its ever-widening sights.
Limited signed copies of the yet to be released book will be available for purchase at the event. In addition, Dan will be glad to answer questions about authoring and publishing from aspiring writers.
In "Playing to Wiin: Nintendo and the Video Game Industry's Greatest Comeback", Dan Sloan details the strategies, people and products which punctuated the recovery of Nintendo while offering a new definition and demographic for a 30-year-old industry. With hit consoles such as the DS and Wii, and games ranging from "Brain Training" to "Wii Fit", Nintendo and its president, Mr. Iwata's, utilized a "Blue Ocean" strategy to add new consumers. Their strategy proved to be a game changer, and made the company among Japan as well as the world's most admired.
Background on Nintendo:
By late in the 20th Century, Nintendo had become a multibillion-dollar colossus producing the world's most popular video games, but not all was well in the House of Mario. Always under the Yamauchi family and nearly always linked to reasonably priced entertainment since its launch as a card maker more than 100 years earlier, Nintendo faced succession issues after five decades with the same boss. While the Kyoto company had lost its global sales title to Sony and was at risk of becoming an industry also-ran, its second major console failed to excite and newcomer Microsoft found traction with consumers.
President Hiroshi Yamauchi, only the third chief in company history, looked at the potential existential corporate crisis and considered solutions outside the box by selecting a new leader for the company who was neither family, Kyoto born nor Nintendo bred. That young president, Satoru Iwata, and a stable of video game artisans, including legend Shigeru Miyamoto, would combine to make the decade like no other in corporate or industry history, taking Nintendo back to the top and making Yamauchi briefly Japan's wealthiest man.
