Three compelling speakers, each who previously lived in Brisbane, unpack the situation from their perspective:
1. Major General Jim Molan AO, DSC (Ret'd):
Unpacking: "What is now unfolding from his experience of local knowledge, leadership and rebuilding communities/infrastructure in difficult environments?" (Paint a high-level picture of what can we expect will happen, and how can we best continue to help with grassroots initiatives.)
Background: Distinguished military career with extensive command and leadership experience, particularly in crisis and difficult environments. Battalion commander and later Divisional Commander both based out of Brisbane. Chief of Operations of all coalition forces in Iraq, author of a best selling book on his experiences titled “Running the War in Iraq” (Harper Collins), command of ADF relief elements in a number of emergency situations including the Charleville Floods, as well as command of evacuation operations in the Solomons and operational service in East Timor.
2. Sally Foley-Lewis:
Unpacking: "What drove Sally and her husband to respond with his trailer?"(How much planning was required? What were the biggest lessons learnt? What would she do differently? How have other people been an inspiration?)
Background: Volunteered her husband's newly purchased trailer to take a load of donated household goods to people in flood affected area. Her’s is a pragmatic story of one Queenslander living in Sydney and watching the situation unfold, deciding to take action and getting on with it. Others joined in, and through social media, news of her efforts quickly spread to others.
3. Brian Tran:
Unpacking: "Is there another dimension to ‘the kindness of strangers?’" (‘Mother Nature' has been held responsible. Some have suggested we should heed lessons from Gaia. If a God exists, is this a case where he (God) has just dumped on us all, and now we are left to sort out the mess?)
Background: Engaging and provoking speaker; Ministry Apprentice at St Andrew's Cathedral (Anglican, Sydney)
The need for support and the ongoing kindness of strangers will remain long after the media turns its focus elsewhere.
