THE CREATURES OF BALINESE MYTHOLOGY
Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the Bay Area ensemble acclaimed for its innovative work with the music and dance of Bali, collaborates with I Made Moja, local Balinese artist from the village of Batuan. The Creatures integrates visual and performing arts to explore the role of legendary characters in Balinese mythology and folklore through episodes drawn for the great Hindu epic, The Ramayana and traditional Balinese folklore. Balinese artists-in-residence, I Ketut Wirtawan, Ida Bagus Made Widnyana, and I Dewa Putu Berata join with I Made Moja and Gamelan Sekar Jaya to create The Creatures and lead the 30+ company of performers in new works for Balinese dance and three distinct live gamelan ensembles—gender wayang batel, gong kebyar, and for the first time in Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s history, gambuh (the oldest classical court dance genre in Bali), with visual direction by Allen Willner and narration and vocals by Emiko Saraswati Susilo (Director of Gamelan Sekar Jaya).
