6th Annual Re-Defining African American Conference
Laying the Groundwork: Du Bois, Dunham, Hurston and Schomburg – Trailblazing the Investigation of the African Diasporan Aesthetic
Admission: Free and Open to the Public
The 6th Annual Re-Defining African American conference, will examine the scholarship and institution building that was done throughout the 30s and 40s by African Diasporan scholars during the Harlem Renaissance and the aesthetic movement that directly followed. Before the notion “Diaspora” was popularized, there was group of scholars from the U.S., the Caribbean and the continent of Africa who recognized the need to draw aesthetic connections between communities existing in the African Diasopran World. Each scholar, examined what it meant to have an identity that was “New World” but also African at its core. Of particular interest for the sake of this conference is focus on aesthetic expressions and retentions as examined by Du Bois, Dunham, Hurston and Schomburg. This conference will attempt to investigate the foundation of African Aesthetic identity in order to further create and establish a framework for defining the African Diasporan aesthetic beyond its African American underpinnings into the Global Black community.
