The technological singularity is a theoretical future point which takes place during a period of accelerating change, at which everything goes completely insane. We're talking hyperintelligent machines, radical biological control, effective immortality, extreme mind-machine interfacing, space colonies, and nanobot-everything. It's going to be great, don't you miss it.

Vernor Vinge called this event "the Singularity" as an analogy between the breakdown of modern physics near a gravitational singularity and the drastic change in society he argues would occur following an intelligence explosion.
Ray Kurzweil maintains that the inevitability of a technological singularity is implied by a long-term pattern of accelerating change that generalizes Moore's Law to technologies predating the integrated circuit, and which he argues will continue to apply to other technologies not yet invented.
**The Singularity will not happen in 2014. Facebook will, however, prevent you from listing events earlier than five years in advance...
**EDIT: Updated :-)
Cooper Marcus Dave, might want to push that meeting off a day. Before The Singularity: you'll need to hire an architect. After The Singularity: You _are_ an architect - and a contractor, and a interior designer, and everything else all at once.

Dave McClure hmm, might be busy that day meeting the The Architect, but I'll try and make it.
Phil Wolff I always liked the idea that the technical singularity was that point where the accelerating volume and velocity of change hit masses greater and speeds faster than we can possibly absorb, understand and stay abreast. So you experience the world with nostalgic retro moments, as you run into people who are very behind you in some ways, and in disorienting, shocking, magical, scary moments when cultures and futures just show up like you've leaped far forward in time.
Captain Lyre Calliope (Grr.. darn enter key!) And now I'm beginning to suspect that the Singularity began with the evolution of the neural architecture that enabled language. Either way, 2014 is close enough. :)

Captain Lyre Calliope I used to subscribe to the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence's definition of the Singularity: the point at which greater than human intelligence comes into being.

David Orban The date appears to be a little too soon, butI will guess we'll see!
