Yo-Yo Ma, the world-famous cellist, received a Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama on Feb. 15, 2011. Ma, although most famous as a musician, was named a Messenger of Peace by the United Nations in 2006. He is also a member of Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Ma has recorded more than 75 albums and won 16 Grammys. Widely known as a prodigy, Ma has been a concert cellist since he was five. Born in Paris to Chinese parents, he moved to New York at a young age and later studied at Julliard School and Harvard University.
The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States. It is awarded to individuals who have made important contributions “to the security or national interests of the United States, or world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to Executive Order 11085. - Yi Yang, Epoch Times Staff
