On Friday 25th February we go downtown Bucharest, Universul Palace for a special night with the superb Ben UFO and Ikonika taking over the underground.
Ben UFO is (along with Ramadanman/Pearson Sound and Pangaea) one of the three minds behind Hessle Audio, the Leeds-based label that has found itself at the forefront of the UK bass scene since its beginnings in 2007. The label has been the home for key releases from Ramadanman and Pangaea, in addition to cuts from TRG and Untold.
Yet to venture into the world of production, Ben UFO has made his name purely on the basis of his skill as a DJ, the extent of which was showcased perfectly by his Resident Advisor podcast in December '10, a brilliant summary of the best in House/Techno/Bass of that year.
His top-notch DJ sets, usually combining the freshest funky, garage, and 2-step sounds with a choice selection of classic dubstep, house, and techno, have been blowing minds for a while now.
Ikonika is the definition of infectious synth lines and off beat structures. Her sound is one that embraces contrast by blending grittiness and colourful flourish while her technique and lust for progression have helped her arrive at what she considers ‘Marmite’ music, a distinction charming in both its awareness and the exclusivity it affords to those who love it. With her debut release on the groundbreaking Hyperdub label, the start of her own label (with Optimum) and tracks waiting in the pipeline, this is Ikonika's best moment.
