Shropcamp is a conference bringing together people working to deliver public services at a local level across Shropshire, Staffordshire and the UK. It is part of the family of localgovcamps taking place across the UK.
We particularly want to look at how service providers (police, health service, councils, social enterprises and charities) can use open data and social media to deliver better services together.
There's a lot of work going on nationally about this agenda. A great place to start finding out about things is this report "The Foundation of Accountability". And we’ll probably want to talk about the rural dimension to all this.
The government is pushing local authorities to publish their datasets to allow other people to build useful tools on the data. This might be fabulous if you are a London Borough with excellent connectivity and a critical mass of computer programmers. Is it going to be the same for sparsely populated rural Councils?
The event will be run in unconference format. At an unconference, the first task is to decide the agenda. Plenty of people will have turned up with an idea of a workshop they would like to run or a workshop they would like to attend. So the workshop programme will be decided on what workshops people offer and whether anyone wants to attend (based on a show of hands).
We should be able to deliver three workshop sessions with space for three or four workshop options in each session. So there is a very good chance that you will be attending workshops are on subjects that genuinely interest you. If you might want to offer a workshop, that's great. You might want to tell everyone what you're thinking about offering over at the ukgovcamp site to see if a bunch of you want to offer something jointly.
