On Sunday February 20th one of my favorite people in the world lost her home to a fire. As if losing everything you own isn't devastating enough, she lost two of her three dogs in the fire. The two that she lost hold a very special place in my heart. Kodi her mastiff just celebrated his 2nd birthday at the bakery and he was my "cousin", he was 260 lbs of amazing (made me look small). He was my best friend and would come stay at my house when his mom traveled (even Diesel liked him). His mom actually got him after meeting me. Kodi I miss him very much. Oliver was an 11 year old lab and he was kindest dog I have ever met. Oliver had several medical issues and for the first time in two years he was doing great. He would go to water therapy with me and we would hang out and eat treats together. Oliver is also one of the cement paw prints at the front of our Plano bakery location. Their passing has ripped the core from “my Aunt” who is one of the most giving people I know. When mom needs help with a rescue dog she is the first one there with her checkbook and when we did our charity calendar for this year she was the first one to step up and sponsored the cover. They are such an important part of our bakery and this loss has torn all of us up.
My Aunt's home and items will be replaced but it won’t bring "her blonde studs" back. When she found out that everyone has been asking what to she said "The Duke and Oliver Foundation". A foundation my mom and her have been working on starting, since before the fire, named after my late brother Duke and her dog Oliver to help rescue dogs and groups in need. My parents wanted to do more and host a benefit honoring Kodi and Oliver with all the proceeds going to the foundation.
The benefit is on April 3rd from 7-9PM at Three Dog Bakery Southlake. The event (which is for our 2-legged friends) will include a dessert buffet, goodie bags and silent auction. Ticket information is coming soon. I am reaching out to my friends to save the date and/or donate to the silent auction. I would love to be able to contribute a large check to the foundation in Kodi and Oliver's name. They were her world and I am determined to keep their memories alive for my special Aunt!
My mom is also creating a guardian angel charm to honor Kodi and Oliver each ticket to the event will include on for your (additional charms and be purchased).
