Gustave Flaubert ´i romaani on nimetatud täiuslikuks kirjanduseks.
Romaani kangelanna Emma Bovary järgi on nimetatud bovarysmiks selliste inimeste vaimuseisundit, kes püüavad "end näha teistsugusena, kui nad on". Peaaegu iga inimese hingekoostises on natuke bovarysmi. "Iga notar kannab endas luuletaja riismeid"...
Emma esindab definitsiooni poolest bovarysmi puhtal kujul. Ta võiks leida banaalse, ent siiski tõelise õnne, kui ta pühendaks end oma tütrele, kui ta pisut püüaks harida meest, kes oma armastuses oleks küllalt hästi kujundatav, ja kuna Emma kord juba armastab luulet, võiks ta enda jaoks avastada looduse ja külaelu poeesia ning toeka talupojaarmastuse.
Kuid ta keeldub nägemast seda, mis teda ümbritseb. Selle asemel, et elada oma elu sellisena, nagu see on talle antud, unistab ta hoopis teistsugusest. Selles on tema pahe. Ja see oli ka Flaubert´i pahe.
Ning see on ka sinu pahe, silmakirjalik vaataja...
Romantiline naine, kes petab oma keskpärast meest, laostab ta ja võtab endalt lõpuks elu - see võib tunduda tühisena, kuid suured tragöödiad saavadki õitsele lüüa ainult banaalsuse peenral...

Gustave Flaubert’s novel has been called the perfect literature.
The novel’s heroine, Emma Bovary, has given birth to what is called bovarism, the condition of people who attempt “to see themselves differently from who they are”. Almost every person’s soul includes a dash of bovarism. “Every notary carries about inside him the debris of a poet.”…
Emma, by definition, represents the purest form of bovarism. She could find banal – but still true – happiness if she dedicated herself to her daughter, if she only tried to educate her husband, who is already rather malleable in love; and since Emma already loves poetry, she could find for herself the poetry of nature and village life and the sturdy peasant love.
But she refuses to see her surroundings. Instead of living her life the way it was given to her, she dreams of a different life. That is her sin. And it is the sin of Flaubert.
And it is your sin, hypocritical viewer…
The romantic women who cheats on her mediocre man, ruins him and finally takes her own life – this may seem trivial, but great tragedies can only bloom in the patch of banality…
