An open letter to the student body:
It's no secret that the Baylor University Student Senate hasn't lived up to its name in recent years. When's the last time the Senate has brought a voice to a concern that you actually have a stake in? When's the last time the Senate addressed pressing student concerns like tuition affordability, the parking glut, dining options, on-campus residence hall requirements, and student activities and organization policy? Perhaps more importantly, when is the last time any of these efforts have made a difference in administrative policy?
The problem is not that the Senate's purpose is inherently irrelevant, and it's not that the individual senators are incapable of doing their jobs. The lack of consistent policies and clear expectations for the leadership is to blame.
That's why I am running for the office of internal vice president, which serves as the chief administrative and presiding officer of the Student Senate.
Running an effective organization is not rocket science; it requires a goal-driven executive setting clear expectations and holding members accountable for meeting them.
If elected, I will apply my experience as president pro tempore, chair of two committees, and vice chair of the Senate Executive Council to put in place sound processes for holding the committee chairs responsible for addressing concerns relevant to students.
With your vote, we can make sure the student voice is heard in all aspects of administrative policy-making. To make the Senate relevant again, we need dynamic leadership. I believe I am uniquely prepared to provide that needed dimension to Student Government, and would appreciate your support.
Thank you,
Daniel Houston | Candidate for IVP
