Some information about ROR: The UW Pediatric Early Literacy Projects are a constellation of programs designed to foster early brain development and school readiness through a series of inexpensive, simple, workable interventions in clinical settings. Comprising a set of Reach Out and Read programs in outpatient clinics (where children at well-child visits are given brand-new, developmentally-appropriate books along with high-quality advice to share books together) and an unprecedented 600-plus book inpatient library for children ages zero through 18 years, we also deploy volunteer readers to clinic and hospital waiting rooms to show families the pleasure of sharing books with children on a regular basis.
In 2010, we distributed about 10,000 books through the outpatient clinics alone! While we make use of grant funding and volunteers to the extent possible, even the significantly discounted books aren’t free. For a mere cost of $3/book, we can provide high-quality books and advice to children in our own community, particularly those at risk for school difficulty. Donations are vital to the organization.
