Muldrow’s lush and atmospheric paintings of big box stores, in acrylic and casein, seduce the viewer with both commonplace familiarity and a sense of awe. Her interiors unfold with realism and a wash of color, creating a dialog between banality and the uncanny. Muldrow uses elements of traditional landscape painting to respond to the mundane shopping meccas that are omnipresent across the country. Cathedrals of Desire represents a tension between the chaotic American consumer landscape and the sublime. The resulting images are alluring and arresting, carrying with them a deep weight of consumer desire.
