Unrest and turmoil is once again spreading around the world, as the revolutions in the Middle East and other places show. One of the primary causes is the rapidly rising price of staple foods. How did this come to be, and what’s in store for a planet with an ever increasing population ?
United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Olivier De Schutter will talk about ways in which a sustainable future can be achieved for producers and consumers alike in a globalized 21st century. As a huge disenfranchised population in third world countries is forced to move to the many slums in emerging mega-cities around the world, he challenges us to think about ways to provide a sustainable income and maintenance for these people.
As a Harvard graduate now resident in Belgium, he was appointed UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food by the Human Rights Council in March 2008. He specializes in international human rights law, EU law and legal theory at the UCL in Brussels.
