New Shit Slam #3 helps us kick off our summer series of fun at the Austin Slam. We're going to be letting our hair down a lot over the summer, and it seemed like Houston Hughes was the perfect person to help us do that. Because he has long hair. Ummm....
The point is that our hosts Peter Nevland and Ruff Draft have put together an extra special night for us. Peter's old touring partner and band mate, Paul Finley, will be filling in as our live DJ between poets and in the breaks. We haven't tried this before, but Paul is a true virtuoso musician... Did you know... Paul used to play with the improv skits at Esther Follies? Has toured the world? Studied under legendary guitarist, Michael Hedges? Grows 2 hands when he play so that he can do percussion also? Yes, it will be that incredible...
Meanwhile, our main feature Houston Hughes is a virtuoso spoken word artist, hailing from Fayetteville, AR. He's a multiple time member of the Ozarks Poetry Slam Team, and an important part of the vibrant and growing slam scene that centers around the University of Arkansas. He's been touring all over the country throughout the past year sharing his work and his heart, so we're definitely expecting a great set!
Poets! Here's what you need to know to participate:
First Round - New poems required! A new poem has never been slammed before.
Second round - 1 minute pieces + additional point for new.
Third round - Extra bonus feature which will defy the laws of slam poetry + additional point for new. It's going to be awesome...
Since 1 minute poems are now a Nationals format at IWPS and WOWPS, we're hoping this will help stretch everyone out of their boxes a bit. It'll also help keep the show from going overlong, and we all like that. ;)
