The Outer Rim Bike Shop is holding a May 7 benefit concert in support of Scot King, an ex-Marine who plans to ride to 133 towns and cities this year.
For those of us who like unique venues, The Outer Rim Bike Shop has been the perfect place to experience an enjoyable evening listening to soul-satisfying jazz. Having sponsored over a dozen jazz performances over the past year, Nadine and Charlie Jones, owners of The Outer Rim Bike Shop, are ready to do yet another wonderful evening of live jazz music at their bike shop. What’s impressive is that at a time when many businesses are preoccupied with just keeping their doors open, Nadine and Charlie are looking to promote other small businesses and to support a “good cause” in addition to offering a jazz concert.
When Scot King approached them about a sponsorship for his cause, Remember the Wounded Ride, Nadine and Charlie Jones didn’t hesitate. “He had such personal integrity,” remembers Nadine. “I will never take for granted those who serve our country, whether it’s those in our armed forces, firefighters, or police.” Charlie himself served in the United States Air Force for thirty years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Even today, he serves as a trauma helicopter pilot for Reach Air Medical. On May 7th he will show the other side of Charlie Jones - he plans to sing the national anthem when Scot King and the other bicyclists finish their ride from Salem to Portland.
The ride from Salem to Portland is actually the kickoff for Scot’s ride to 133 towns and cities. Why such a long bike ride? Even for cycle-crazy Portland that is momentous. “The ride is about all the men and women in uniform who have given so much,” says Scot. Scot will be cycling on May 7 th, 2011 from Salem and, many miles later, he will end up in Washington, D.C. on October 25th, 2011. When he completes his ride, he will have ridden 8,165 total miles - a true commitment to the men and women who sacrifice so that others can enjoy the freedom and values we often take for granted.
A Portland native, Scot King himself served in the Marine Corp from 1986 until 1990. An avid athlete, Scot has taken on “good causes” more than once. He participated in a relay with runners with disabilities, helped neglected teenagers, and now he is focusing his efforts on our country’s service men and women. Recently after doing research, Scot discovered that often military personnel are forgotten after they come back from their tour of duty. He hopes to increase awareness about the courage and sacrifices the people in our armed forces make every day and to raise funds to offer services to these brave men and women and their families. Scot likes the quote from John F. Kennedy: “One person can make a difference and everyone should try.”
The staff at The Outer Rim Bike Shop hopes that the public will come to the shop on May 7th from 2 pm until 9 pm, to enjoy fabulous music, tasty food, and of course, to help honor our combat-wounded veterans, service men and women and supporters of Scot King’s Remember The Wounded Ride.
After the arrival of Scot and his company of riders (including combat-wounded veterans, supporters and friends of the ride) The Truth Be Told will perform from 3 pm until 5 pm. Aside from raffling off a bicycle during the event, The Outer Rim will also donate a hand-propelled tricycle to a disabled veteran; the winner will be announced on Veteran’s Day. (Veterans may get details by going to
www.RememberTheWoundedRide.com to see how to enter this drawing.) Since Nadine and Charlie believe in promoting small businesses (the life blood of America, according to Nadine), the event on May 7th will include several food and beverage vendors. A silent auction will be going on during the event from 2 pm until 5:30 pm. All proceeds from the auction will go to Remember the Wounded Ride.
The jazz concert is from 6 pm until 9 pm. The musicians for the not-to-be-missed jazz portion of this important event include Portland favorites Lee Wuthenow on tenor sax, Paul Mazzio on trumpet, Stan Bock on trombone, Gordon Lee on piano, Chuck Israels on bass, Duncan Branom on drums and singer Shelly Rudolf. These fine Northwest musicians always give superb performances and are sure to please.
Please support a good cause, local talent and small business by coming to The Outer Rim on May 7th! This is guaranteed to be a memorable event.
