Spring is once again upon us and it's time for another Access Arts' Public Art shows at Belle Isle. On June 18, Access Arts will open it's 5th exhibit at the Park. Join us as we celebrate the beauty of the park and the creative process through public art produced by local visual artists.
As part of this year's exhibit, we reached a milestone through an epic fundraiser with Supino Pizzeria and additional support by Recycle Here!. As a result of so many people's generosity, Access is able to help support artist with project stipends for the first time!
The exhibition is being curated by a team of local artists, Vanessa Miller, Andrew Thompson, Cedric Tai and Louis Casinelli.
Artists selected for the exhibition will be announced on May 25 and have a project deadline submission date of May 20th. See Access' website for more details. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for updates about the June 18th exhibit.
[About]
Started in 2008, Access Arts programs and initiatives are focused on the intersection of public art, arts education and public space in Detroit. Access Arts is Forward Arts' visual arts + arts education program.
[What is public art?]
Public art is a fun way for creative minds to engage public spaces. For Access Arts, public art is an alternative and unique means for artists and park goers (Metro Detroiters) to engage Belle Isle's amazing and diverse landscapes. Our goal is to infuse the park with creative energy and unique experiences. The exhibition is an adventure and opportunity to for us reconnect with the beauty of the park.
The practice of public art is a creative process that allows artists a broad range of possibility through the fusion or mashup of several arts disciplines. Often, public art converges on multiple disciplines in a single project (e.g. painting, sculpture, performance, ceramics, drawing and photography). This type of arts practice is centered outdoors and accessible to all. Public art can range from an individual project to a collaborative community work of art.
