ABOUT THE HORSE BOY FOUNDATION:
Rupert Isaacson founded the Horse Boy Foundation after his son, Rowan, who has autism, showed startling improvement after a horseback trip to Mongolia. The story of Isaacson and wife Kristin Neff's journey with their son was the subject of a book Isaacson wrote, "The Horse Boy," and a 2009 documentary film of the same name “The Horse Boy” movie.
The Horse Boy Foundation brings special needs children (mainly kids on the autism spectrum) and ‘neuro-typical’ (i.e. ‘normal’) children together, using the horse as a social nexus. The Horse Boy foundation works to give kids the chance to ride and benefit from close contact with horses, other animals, and nature. Children with neurological issues seem to particularly benefit from this, but all children benefit from connecting with animals and nature.
The Horse Boy Foundation believes in taking a whole-family approach when working with autistic children, so that siblings can have fun and be included in the “therapy” (which doesn’t seem like therapy any more). Parents also participate fully, so family bonds are strengthened.
The Horse Boy Foundation works with a very small number of local families at our headquarters in Elgin, Texas, however their main emphasis is on training other stables and horse people in the specifics of the Horse Boy Method™. The trainings are offered at other locations in the United States and abroad.
The Horse Boy Method™ found techniques that seem to greatly enhance the following: verbal skills and general communication, calm neurological outbursts (tantrums and violent behavior), self-stimulatory behaviors (stimming), and open children’s hearts and minds through interaction with horses and nature. In addition, the techniques use the horse as a classroom, teaching academic concepts in an intrinsically motivating manner.
An important mission of the Horse Boy Foundation is to raise funds to send children and families to stables certified in the Horse Boy Method™.
