Northwest Ballet Theater presents Emerald Bay, a dramatic ballet that centers around a young Scottish girl entangled in tensions between her community and Chinese immigrants in Washington around 1885. It brings a West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet-like drama that has its setting in Bellingham Port when local legends like saloon owner Dirty Dan Harris, fish cannery entrepreneur Goon Dip, and visiting journalist Mark Twain also became embroiled in the ethnic and cultural misunderstandings that faced their once peaceful community. Vibrant Scottish, Chinese, Russian and other folk dance styles combine with balletic scenes to illustrate an authentic and elegant representation of this time in Washington State and Bellingham history. This captivating production is appropriate for all ages. Guest artists include Christina Stockdale and Cheng Yu performing the roles of Julie O'Connor and Li Puo.
