Peace Through Pie kicks-off Austin’s June 19th celebrations and helps raise funds to restore the 115-year-old historic landmark Limerick-Frazier House as a community gathering place where culinary exhibits, cooking classes for adults and kids, and organic gardens will be held.
Pie Social activities include: sweet and savory pies from Austin restaurants, ice cream, lemonade, a City Council Proclamation, organic produce from Urban Roots, a Tell Us Your Pie Story oral history project by Foodways Texas, a celebrity pie auction featuring cookbook author Nancie McDermott, kids' activities, an art exhibition, and music by Austin's First Lady of Jazz Pamela Hart. Suggested donation is $25.
Saving the Limerick-Frazier House is a project of The SANDE Youth Project, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, I founded to improve lives using food, nutrition, and cultural heritage.
Peace Through Pie is an expression of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of a "Beloved Community," where everyone shares a piece of the pie. The pie is an age-old comfort food in many traditions around the world, and it symbolizes an inclusive equality with its circular form and diverse ingredients. It is a delicious way to raise awareness, build community, and celebrate freedom.
The event is sponsored by Kikkoman, USA with programming support by Edible Austin Magazine, Whole Foods Market, University of Texas Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, Austin Community College Continuing Education, Ellen Pulner Hunt Architects, County Fair Concessions, Blue Bell Ice Cream, and Wholesale Florist Pikes Peak.
