DISASTERS 2.0 – Social Media Usage in Emergencies and Disasters
From earthquakes in Japan to tornadoes in Joplin, social media has played an integral role in the way government communicates with its citizens. Organizations such as the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management Office have lead the way in the implementation and adaptation of social media in preparedness and response to disasters throughout the Midwest. This presentation will highlight local practices as well as real-life experiences related to the use of social media at all levels of government during disasters. Moreover, the challenges for audience engagement and participation will be discussed in light of non-government affiliated social media outlets providing real-time accurate and valuable information as well as governmental policies and legal restrictions.
Tom Erickson (@JoCoSheriff) and Adam Crowe are the featured speakers in June. As always, this should be interesting! Be sure to attend.
